Fired Up for Positive Coaching: PCA-Chicago & Chicago Fire Celebrate Double-Goal Coach® Award Winners

07.08.2019

Seven Chicagoland youth sports and high school coaches were recognized for making a positive impact on local youth by teaching life lessons through sports.

CHICAGO (JULY 10, 2019) -
On Wednesday, July 3 at the Chicago Fire’s home game vs. Atlanta United, the Chicago Chapter of Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA-Chicago), a nonprofit organization with the mission to improve the culture of youth and high school sports so that all athletes have a positive, character-building experience, recognized youth sport and high school coaches who reflect the model of a Double-Goal Coach, whose first goal is winning, and whose second, more-important goal is teaching life lessons through sports.

A Double-Goal Coach®:

• Takes a mastery approach to sport rather than a scoreboard orientation, teaching athletes to put forward maximum effort, continuously learn and improve, and not let themselves be stopped by mistakes or fear of mistakes.

• Fills Emotional Tanks of athletes, refusing to motivate through fear, intimidation, or shame.

• Honors the Game by respecting ROOTS (Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates, Self).

Chicago Fire President and General Manager Nelson Rodríguez welcomed families and guests to SeatGeek Stadium and congratulated the following coaches as 2019 Double-Goal Coach Award winners:

Not in attendance were Debbie Coffman of Central Catholic High School (Basketball), Karen Judge of Glenbard West High School (Women's Field Hockey) and Dule Radovanovic of Team Evanston / Chicago Fire Juniors North Shore (Soccer). Coach Coffman, Judge, Ivery and Ware also earned recognition as National Double-Goal Coach Award winners.

“The importance of positive coaching in young people’s lives cannot be understated,” said Rodríguez, who joined PCA- Chicago’s Board of Directors earlier this year. “Youth coaches are well positioned to develop not only better athletes, but more importantly better people. I am proud that we are able to recognize these special individuals and to continue supporting the Positive Coaching movement.”

“We are grateful to Nelson, the Chicago Fire Soccer Club, PCA-Chicago’s Board of Directors and First Midwest Bank for supporting tonight’s Double-Goal Coach Celebration,” said Rob Dauphinais, Executive Director for PCA-Chicago. “This was a special opportunity to recognize a caring group of individuals who are not only winning on the scoreboard but more importantly are a positive influence in the lives of the young athletes they coach.”
